WHAT IS

BRAZIL NUT?

Brazil Nuts (Bertholletia excelsa) are the large seeds of an enormous wild tree native from the South-east part of the Amazon Region. It grows in the rainy areas of the rainforest located in Brazil, Bolivia and Peru. Known as Coquito de Brazil, Amazonian Nut, Nuez del Pará, Castaña amazonica, etc, the Brazil nut tree is one of the highest and oldest tree of the Amazonian. It can reach a height of more than 35 meters , with a trunk diameter of nearly 2.5 meters, and live more than one thousand years. The fruits have a dark brown color, similar to woody capsules with 8 to 15 cm. diameter, and can weigh around 1 and 1.5 kilos, containing 8 to 24 seeds. Inside of these shells we can find the Brazil Nut kernels, which are creamy nuts with a halfmoon shape and with a pale yellow / brown color. Brazil nut trees are dependent of bees for its pollination, and also depend on Agoutis (a large rodent with sharp teeth) for the seeds dispersal, since they are the only known animals that can open the woody capsules, and help to the propagation of the seeds. If these species disappear, so will the Brazil nut tree.

It helps renew, dry hair, split ends and restores damaged hair. It also acts as a perfect moisturizer for the skin. The creams of this oil help to keep it soft, smooth, hydrated and young. NUTRITIONAL

Brazil nuts have been found to be rich sources of unsaturated fatty acids which help in combating cardiovascular diseases. The abundant presence of fatty acids contributes to Brazil nut’s high level of caloric content. This helps in reducing bad cholesterol or LDL and increase good cholesterol or HDL in the blood. Brazil nuts are unique in that they are the highest known food source of Selenium, a promising anti-cancer trace mineral that may prompt cancer cells to self-destruct, promote DNA repair; and boost immunity. Selenium is also necessary for the proper functioning of the thyroid gland, discouraging the aging process and stimulating the immune system. Proper selenium intake may reduce the risk of breast, prostate, lung, skin, and colon cancer. Selenium’s antioxidants may also help against the premature aging, Parkinson and Alzheimer diseases. The high protein and fiber content of Brazil Nuts, help to control hunger and losing weight.
